Project Overview & Description

For my EDGE project, I would like to combine both my academic focus and work focus into one. To do this, I plan on having my martial arts students, along with myself, organize several goods drives and possibly perform in-person community service if opportunities present themselves here in Cedar City. Examples of service projects might include things such as serving at homeless shelters, volunteering at assisted living facilities, creating care packages, organizing a goods drive for the Cedar City Women's Crisis Center, and other projects as community needs arise. I would like to do around one service project a month, beginning this November, and ending next summer in 2019. I want to do this because I want both myself and my students to gain insight from helping the community.

I feel like this project is an opportunity for exceptional amounts of emotional growth in terms of sympathy and care. I hope that the project helps me to better understand others needs, and their perspectives. Quite often we are surrounded with the same people and things from day to day and do not encounter those who have drastically different circumstances than we do. These people offer a great gift to us in the form of offering their perspective and life experience.

I will be taking photos of all drives/events. Anytime I drop goods off I will ask for some form of verification (receipt) that I donated goods. I have done this before, so it should not be an issue. However, if they can not do this for some reason I will ask them to sign a log full of all the things donated for verification. This goes for the CCWCC as well. For the packages for the troops I will ask for an email verification. I will also be asking my students to write brief reflections, which I will present.
